Westerdale Farms Land Fowl Black Copper Marans

Black Copper Marans

Black copper marans are known for their dark chocolate- russet brown eggs and their delicious meat. They have soft shiny black feathers with copper highlight feathers on their necks. The odd time some hens will be fairly black and will get their copper feathers after their first molt.  They are a medium sized dual purpose bird. Marans originated in France and are part of the Continental class. They were admitted into the Standard in 2011.  We have shown our BCM over the years but are working more with other breeds for show but we follow the SOP very closely while making breeding decisions.  We have tried many lines but are rebuilding our entire flock with a line that we brought in six years ago. As well, we brought in several new lines to use in 2022 that originated in Ontario and the US. The next few years will be exciting while we test our new BCM lines.  Black copper marans have reddish bay eyes, stocky bodies, white skin, medium single comb and lightly feathered legs. Cocks are 8 pounds and hens are 6.5 pounds. Hens are sweet and I rarely have ever had a mean cock here on the farm.
