Isabel Ameraucana
Isabel Ameraucana are new to our farm in the last four years. They started off as a covid project from our lavender/wheaten pen. Since there is a limited genetic pool of them here in Canada, I spent a few years working with my own line and splits to improve their size and ameraucana traits. There is currently one split left in the pen for genetic diversity for 2024. I tend to breed wheaten into them every couple years.
I find ameraucana to be tough and I love their shell color. Hens weigh 5.5 pounds and males weigh 6.5 pounds. They lay a decent amount of sky blue eggs and they are fairly quiet birds.
Ameraucana can tolerate a wide range of climates and are suited to the cold with their pea combs. They have lovely beards and muffs. I find them to be friendly, inquisitive and great foragers. Males are strong protectors of their flocks making sure everyone is alerted at any sign of danger. I have rarely had an ameraucana that was aggressive to our family. We also raise ameraucana in blue, black, splash and chocolate.
